The Conservations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film by Michael Ondaatje has a candid introduction and then progresses through five interviews with Mr. While editing The Unbearable Lightness of Being in France, Academy Award-winning film editor and sound designer Walter Murch came across a reference to Italian writer Curzio Malaparte's description of horses being suddenly flash frozen . In the first conversation Murch talks In the fifth, and last, conversation the subject ranges from I Ching and Rilke to Murch's own writing and his directorial work on Return to Oz, which was inspired by Wisconsin Death Trip. I highly recommend reading 'The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film' by Michael Ondaatje. In Murch's book, The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film, he discusses how to choose the work that makes you happiest. In The Conversations you talk about the lead role of Apocalypse Now being originally shot with Harvey Keitel, and how that was a totally different film because when you look at Keitel it's not about watching him observe things. The Conversation has been marked in cinema history for Walter Murch's distinguished use of contemporary sound design, and the film's successful move from classical image/sound match. Walter Murch, who years later re-edited the movie to Welles's specifications, comments extensively on this in his book-length interview with Michael Ondaatje, The Conversations: Walter Murch And The Art of Editing Film. There's a few quotes in particular that never made it to the final edit of the book (speaking of editing!). Certainly Michael Ondaatje's The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film belongs on any cinephile's top shelf but also within reach of anyone who cares about any art. I was excited to hear Ondaatje address questions stemming from his book The Conversations: Walter Murch and the Art of Editing Film, which coincidentally, I am currently reading.
